9 take-aways for better leadership skills

Danijela Kanaet. has lived and worked in several countries in Europe; climbed the hierarchy thanks to her devoted work and endless energy; active member of PWN (Professional Women’s Network) suggests:

  1. Say No, when the answer should be “no”. “No” is a “no”, it I not “maybe” nor “yes”.
  2. Be careful with selecting your words and use strong words, avoiding all words that make your message weaker (“just”, “I think”, “I believe”, “It seems” … etc.)
  3. If needed, always apologize!
  4. Don’t try to please everybody – this is mission impossible and it will cost you too much of your energy.
  5. Lack of respect is not tolerable – not at home nor at work.
  6. Don’t try to accomplish everything by yourself. Yes, you are a superhero, but there is no need to show that to the whole world.
  7. Have clear goals and visions … and follow them. If you don’t have your own goals, others will lead you to theirs.
  8. Make sure, that your idea will be pinned to you, not to others.
  9. Be accountable for yourself and your life’s decisions. At the end of the day you are exactly there, where your decisions led you to.

WOMEN ACHIEVE EXCELLENT RESULTS IN TRAININGS FOR MANAGEMENT POSITIONS

Vir: Nacionalna raziskava o nizkem deležu delovne sile žensk na trgu dela; UN Women – United Nation Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, junij 2017.

PRIČEVANJE – Valentina Disoska, predsednica Zveze poslovnih žensk Makedonija

Svoje delo v Združenju poslovnih žensk vidim kot ljubezen in izziv, saj z zaposlovanjem žensk v podjetništvu ustvarjamo večjo stopnjo zaposljivosti, zmanjšujemo revščino in odpiramo
Invitation to share good practice on gender equality

Regarding the results of the research one of the project goals has to be to raise awareness of the gender equality in large and medium-sized companies in Macedonia. Therefore, we invite you to build the awareness, spread the good practices and share with us your activities, programs and projects on equal involvement of women and men in your company. For more information on sharing your good practices, please contact Natalie C. Postruznik at [email protected].

Labour market characteristics of women in Macedonia

The employment ratio of women in the Republic of Macedonia is 40.9%, while their inactivity rate is 41%, shows the National Research on Low Female Labour Market Participation, published by the UN WOMEN – United Nation Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in June 2017.

Monthly wages of working women

Most of them (53%) reported to earn wage between 10,000 and 19,999 MKD. About 18.3% earned between 20,000-29,999 MKD, and 9.6% earned up to 9,999 MKD, while a total of only 2.7% earn 40,000 MKD and more. The minimum wage in the economy in 2016 is 10,080 MKD and 9,080 MKD in few sectors of the economy (textile, apparel and leather industry).

Income distribution by ethnicity and settlement suggests that it is similar between Macedonian and Albanian ethnicity, despite more Albanian women do not earn any income. Turk women feature worse, as three fourths of them earn between 10 and 20 thousand MKD, while Roma women feature the worst, since two third do not earn any income, which could be related to their highly disadvantaged position on the labour market and deep involvement in the informal and communal sector. In terms of the geographical position, women in the villages are slightly worse positioned on the income ladder than urban women.

Hours worked per week

Most women (43.8%) work forty hours per week which is considered as standard working week by the labour legislation. Slightly below 30% of them work overtime. Some women (6%) work unusually short hours (less than 9 hours per week) which is probably related to casual and unpaid work.

Working visit – MACEDONIA

In the first days of July, the project team met in Macedonia at the first working meeting. The purpose of the visit was to present the project to the widest target group and to establish contacts with individuals of companies, chambers of commerce, non-governmental organizations and embassies who are willing to participate in the achievement of project results.

We met with representatives of Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and companies. The outcome of the meetings is confirmation of participation in the project as project ambassadors in Macedonia and assistance in promoting the project and content on gender equality in leading positions in the economy.

The project team successfully implemented the agreements, reviewed the realization of the project so far and made plans for the next steps in achieving the set goals.

First results on Gender Equality research in Macedonia

EqualPower to the Women Infografika by Sara Toskan - Doba

EqualPower to the Women Infografika by Sara Toskan – Doba

If we take a look at the infographics on the left, we can see, that there are quite a few discrepancies in the field of employment of men and women in Macedonia. We wanted to know, where the reasons for that lie and if the large and middle-sized companies in Macedonia are aware of that facts; and if so, what measures and activities do they perform to un-do the injustice.

So during the last two months the research on Gender Equality in Macedonia, to which we invited 1200 companies and over 300 participated, was conducted by Izida Vita, Slovenia, and Institute for Communications Studies, Macedonia. The questionnaire consisted out of 20 questions.

Here are some first results:

  • Over 98 % of participants know the term Gender Equality
  • 75 % think that Gender Equality is very important, but 2,6 % think it is not important at all
  • this share changes unfavourably regarding the importance of Gender Equality within the company: it drops to 62 % (very important) and the share of answers “not important at all” rises to 3,3 %
  • As researches have shown repeatedly, Gender Equality has positive influence on
    1. Effective business performance
    2. Financially more efficient performance of the company
    3. Creative processes in the company
    4. Less risk taking in the decision making process
    5. More ethical conduct of the company

Only 54 % (a), 46 % (b), 65 % (c), 42 % (d) and 65 % (e) of participants strongly agreed with that statements; unfortunately, on the other hand we can find strong disagreement among 2 – 3 % of the participants.

  • As different researches showed that 1/3 of top management has to be women (men) (=balanced management) to achieve the most efficient, effective, ethical and successful companies as well as high level of employee engagement, we wanted to know, how the participants regarded that:
    • Almost 12 % thought, that 1 women (man) is enough to establish the gender balanced management
    • 3 % are convinced it has to be 1/5
    • 5,6 % think it needs to be 1/4
    • 14 % go for 1/3 (which is the correct answer)
    • and over 65 % believe it is ½
  • We think it is a good news, that over 26 % have already tried one or more activities to raise gender balanced management within the companies and 14 % plan to do so. It leaves some room for improvement and follow-up communication, that almost 60 % haven’t introduced any of the activities on gender balanced management and do not plan on doing so.

We will publish more on the gender equality research publicly on the web Mid July, when the analysis is thoroughly done. If you want more beforehand, please write to Gorazd Postruznik to [email protected].

Infografics on Gender Equality in Macedonia prepared by: Sara Toškan, Doba Faculty

Students at Doba Faculty on the project

Students at Doba Faculty prepared infographics and short videos on the project Equal Power to the Women. Over 140 different projects were prepared, some of them really touching, some of them moving and some of them sharp as a needle: gender equality is not a punishment, it is a privilege. Take a look at one of the videos, prepared by the student Blanka Kroflič and share your thoughts, comments with us or online:

Unfavourable Gender Structure of the Employment in Macedonia

The employment in the Republic of Macedonia is characterized by a very unfavourable gender structure. This structure has remained unchanged over a longer period of time due to: unstable economic and social conditions in the country and imbalance between the available and required profiles on the labour market.

The employment rate for women in the Republic of Macedonia in 2015 was 33.7, which is significantly lower than the employment rate of 50.5 for men.

The unemployment rate for women was 25.1 and for men 26.7.

The activity rate for women, at 44.9, was lower, while men had a significantly higher rate of 68.9.

Online debate: Is there gender equality in Macedonia? When deciding about jobs, depending on the position, whether gender plays an important role? Are there prejudices that women are unskilled drivers than men; they can`t do “male” works; they aren`t good for politics; they should take care about the home and the family, and men should care finances?

Read the arguments on the online debate of Livada.mk realised within the project “Be IN, Debate”.

Prenos znanja v prakso: glavni fokus Izide Vite

  • integracije in povezovanja strokovnjakov iz znanstvenih, umetnostnih, izobraževalnih področij, razvoj in podpora znanstveno-raziskovalnega dela;
  • oblikovanja in izvajanja študijskih in znanstveno-raziskovalnih programov, pomembnih za spodbujanje družbenega, gospodarskega, tehnološkega, kulturnega razvoja, osebnostnega razvoja posameznikov in družbe;
  • prenosa doseženega znanja, izkušenj in tehnologij v prakso ter razvoj inovativne dejavnosti.

Dvojni fokus ICS: podpora družbenim vedam in podpora gospodarstvu

Management strateškega komuniciranja in 2. Management medijev in multimedije. Z raziskovalnega vidika ICS razvija akademsko raziskovanje in promovira uporabne inovativne znanstvene ideje z namenom odzivanja na potrebe gospodarstva. IVS izdaja znanstveno publikacijo znotraj “ResPublica” edicije.

Pomembnost ankete o enakopravni zastopanosti spolov v managementu

Glavni cilj ankete je dvig ozaveščenosti o enakopravni zastopanosti spolov v velikih in srednje velikih podjetjih v Republiki Makedoniji, in definirati odstotek žensk in moških na vodilnih položajih v managementu.

Vabimo vas, da podprete naš projekt in izpolnite anketo, kar vam bo vzelo 10 minut časa. Z veseljem vam posredujemo rezultate in informacije o projektu, če vas tema podrobneje zanima.

Je ustanoviteljica organizacije Girls Who Code.

Predstavljamo pretekle projekte: Projekt gospodarska krepitev vloge žensk v regiji Vardar

V okviru projekta Equal Power to the Women v Makedoniji različne ciljne javnosti obveščamo o dogajanjih, izsledkih, rezultatih, različnih aktivnostih … s področja enakovrednosti in uravnoteženosti vodenja po spolu. Tukaj je prvi newsletter.

Projekt vibracij in samozavesti

V letu, ko Slovenija in Makedonija praznujeta 25. obletnico vzpostavitve diplomatskih odnosov, sta civilni družbi obeh držav pričeli z novim projektom Enakopravna moč ženskam.

Vsem sodelujočim želimo obilo uspehov in vam stojimo ob strani.

Nova energija

Equal Power to the Women/Enakopravna moč ženskam

Raziskava v Makedoniji o enakosti spolov
